Adam Bien
Software Engineer / Architect
Various employers
I am an architect and developer (with usually 20/80 distribution) in Java (SE / EE / Jakarta EE / MicroProfile) and Web (ES 6+, Web Components, Web Standards "no frameworks") projects. Often I start as an architect and, after a few days, find myself developing PoCs, performing code reviews, or helping teams develop critical parts of a system. In recent years, I have helped many clients migrate Java EE / Jakarta EE / MicroProfile applications to serverless architectures on AWS and Azure. Such projects often begin with code and architecture reviews and conclude with pragmatic cloud migrations. My clients sometimes ask me: "O.k., but what about the web frontend?" so I also help companies avoid migrations by leveraging web standards such as ES 6, modern CSS, and Web Components to build sustainable web applications. Sometimes, we transform existing but "bloated" applications from a framework to vanilla web standards. I have written several books on JavaFX, J2EE, and Java EE, and I am the author of Real World Java EE Patterns—Rethinking Best Practices and Real World Java EE Night Hacks—Dissecting the Business Tier. I write books and articles during my travels, and sometimes even in unproductive meetings. In my leisure, I participate in the JCP as an Expert Group member for Java EE 6 and 7, EJB 3.X, JAX-RS, CDI, and JPA 2.X JSRs. I am also a Java Champion, NetBeans Dream Team Founding Member, Tech Star of the Year 2023, Oracle ACE Director, Sun :-) Certified Programmer, Sun Certified Java Architect, AWS Hero, AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, AWS Certified Developer Associate, AWS Certified Solutions Architect Professional, AWS Certified SysOps Administrator Associate, AWS Certified Database - Specialty, and Java Developer of the Year 2010, with attendees of my sessions choosing me as JavaOne Rock Star in 2009, double Rock Star in 2011, 2012, 2014, and triple Rock Star in 2013. I'm speaking regularly at conferences, although I'm neither a professional speaker nor a writer. I simply enjoy writing code and eliminating bloat. ...and Java is perfect for that.
